Center for Research on Inter-group Relations and Conflict Resolution (CERIC)

The Southeast Asian Studies Program at Ohio University is proud to announce it has received a U.S. Department of State Federal Assistance Grant to conduct Training of Trainer (TOT) workshops for academics and professionals throughout Indonesia in partnership with the University of Indonesia's Center for Research on Intergroup Relations and Conflict Resolution (CERIC).

The workshops, scheduled to take place in December 2002 and July 2003, will focus on local-level conflict management, democratic dialogue, the role of media in reporting on conflict, and tolerance education. Instructional media and a series of one-minute television spots on tolerance education, both in Indonesian language, will be produced. Participants in the workshops will include journalists and media professionals, organizations dedicated to media advancement, faculty from Schools of Education, and faculty from universities in CERIC's network.
Given the violent nature of religious, cultural and ethnic intergroup relations in Indonesia since the fall of the Soeharto regime in May 1998, the need for conflict management and resolution training among Indonesia's educators and media professionals is significant. By working together, the Southeast Asian Studies Program and the University of Indonesia hope to make an important contribution to mutual understanding among religious and ethnic groups in Indonesia and increased stability in the region.
